Auf dem Altarbild von Martin Schongauer aus dem 15. Jahrhundert (ca. 1473) thront Maria auf einer Rasenbank in einem zeitlosen paradiesischen Rosengarten zugleich als Königin und Mutter. Wer vor diesem Bild betete, sollte sich dem himmlischen Paradies und Marias Fürbitte nahe fühlen.
Das World Press Foto 2024 von Reuters-Fotograf Mohammed Salem zeigt eine in sich gekehrte trauernde Frau, die den Leichnam eines Kindes in den Armen hält.
Das Wechselbild thematisiert einerseits eine Hoffnung ausstrahlende Maria, andererseits eine zeitgenössische Pieta, die unausweichlich mit Leid und Tod konfrontiert ist. Beide Bilder zeigen zugleich auch die gegenteilige Erfahrung: Das raumgreifende rote Gewand der Schongauer Maria verweist symbolisch auf die kommende Passion des die Mutter liebevoll umarmenden Kindes, wie die in sich gekehrte Haltung der Trauernden auch die Liebe zu diesem toten Kind sichtbar werden lässt.
Schon die Auftaktinstallation verdeutlicht die Ambivalenz menschlichen Lebens zwischen Verzweiflung und Hoffnung, die den thematischen roten Faden des Cityadvents 2025 bildet.
In Martin Schongauer's 15th-century altarpiece (ca. 1473), Mary is enthroned on a lawn bench in a timeless, paradisiacal rose garden, both as queen and mother. Those who prayed before this image were meant to feel close to heavenly paradise and Mary's intercession.
The World Press Photo 2024 by Reuters photographer Mohammed Salem shows an introverted, grieving woman holding the body of a child in her arms.
The alternating image depicts, on the one hand, a Mary radiating hope and, on the other, a contemporary Pietà inevitably confronted with suffering and death. Both images also show the opposite experience: the expansive red robe of Schongauer's Mary symbolically refers to the coming passion of the child lovingly embracing his mother, just as the introverted posture of the mourner also reveals her love for this dead child.
The opening installation already illustrates the ambivalence of human life between despair and hope, which forms the thematic thread of City Advent 2025.
